Condition

Gummy Smile

A smile that displays an excessive amount of gum under the upper lip is regarded as a gummy smile (excessive gingival display).

It is caused by either an abnormal tooth eruption, overactivity of lip elevating muscles, an abnomally long up jaw bone (maxilla) or over eruption of some of the front facing upper teeth. Very often there is a combination of these factors.

It is important you consult a qualified dentist if you suspect any dental problems, Dr Rory will refer you accordingly if this is the case.

Treatment options include orthodontic work, but BTA injections at a specialized point know as Yonsei point help to relax the muscles that pull the upper lip up (these are called the levator labii superioris-LLS, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle -LLSAN and the zygomaticus minor-ZM).

The action of these muscles can also be modified in a process called myomodulation with dermal fillers such as Juvederm Voluma.
