Surgical Procedure
Head and Neck Cancer
Head and Neck cancer reconstruction is a very demanding area to reconstruct due to the highly specialised tissues in the head and neck area.
It most often involves Free flap surgery which involves removing tissue from one part of the body and detaching it from its blood supply and then reatttaching it to the area of the head and neck where it is needed and reconnecting its blood supply.
Reconnection of blood supply involves stitching the blood vessels back together under a microscope. The transferred tissue now survives in its new location due to its blood supply.
The free flap surgery allows for specialized units of tissue to be transferred to allow reconstruction of the highly unique areas of the head and neck region that have to be removed in the event of cancer removal surgery.
This is a lengthy, highly technical reconstructive procedure and is performed under a general anaesthetic and requires a stay in hospital. It also involves a number of different surgeons and hospital specialists in the treatment of head and neck cancers.
The final cost of any head and neck reconstruction is determined on a case by case basis dependent on complexity and the combination of any other additional procedures.
Combination surgeries will lower the price of individual surgeries if done together.
